Description and details
Winter on the Alpspitze, Bavarian Alps Early twentieth-century alpine painting depicting a snowy mountain landscape, made with textural paint and a luminous palette. Code: QM235 Age: early 1900s Provenance: Germany Author: C.H. Zimmermann Technique: oil on panel Measurements of work: 59 x 72 cm Measures with frame: 73 x 86 cm Description: Painting depicting a winter alpine landscape dominated in the center by the figure of the Alpspitze, in the Bavarian Alps, Germany. The rocky relief is rendered through a solid, simplified construction, with sloping planes highlighted by light backgrounds and cool shadows. A snowy slope can be recognized in the foreground, traversed by irregular marks that suggest the movement of the terrain and light on the snow. A few coniferous trees emerge on the left, treated with a textural, synthetic brushstroke that introduces a vertical element in contrast to the horizontal course of the landscape. The palette is restrained, dominated by blues, grays and whites, with darker touches in the rocks and foliage. The paint layering is thick and visible, with noticeable brush strokes giving rhythm and depth to the surface. Available with the 7-cm antique fir frame, custom-made in our restoration workshop.
