Description and details
Oil painting on canvas depicting Penitent Saint Jerome, datable to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The work can be ascribed to the sphere of Central Italian painting, with a specific earlier attribution to Giovanni de' Vecchi (1536-1615) or his circle. The composition presents the saint in a moment of mystical asceticism inside a rocky cavern, according to an iconography widely used in the Counter-Reformation period. The subject is caught in three-quarter view, looking upward and his hands placed on a skull, a symbol of meditation on the vanity of earthly life (memento mori). The color scheme is dominated by the contrast between the complexion and the deep red of the mantle, an element that accentuates the figure's vigor against the dark background of the cave and the glimpse of the twilight landscape visible on the left. From a conservation point of view, the artifact shows traces of not recent restoration work. The canvas has undergone an old reintelo, a common practice in past centuries to consolidate the original support. Some localized retouching is visible and the surface varnish is partially oxidized. The overall state of preservation is stable and good. Measurements: 73 x 86 cm (canvas)
