Description and details
A painting from the Emilia-Romagna area datable to the middle of the 18th century, it is distinguished by a dynamic composition and chiaroscuro handling of strong emotional impact. The scene depicts the climactic moment of the meeting between the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary, immersed in a mystical darkness ripped open by celestial flashes. Gabriel, caught in a descending movement with a Baroque flavor, appears suspended on a blanket of clouds while bearing the traditional lilies, symbol of purity, and points with his right hand to the dove of the Holy Spirit radiating light from above. The Virgin, kneeling in an attitude of humble acceptance, turns her gaze toward the divine, with an open prayer book at her feet emphasizing her spiritual dedication. The pictorial drafting reveals a sensitivity typical of the mature 18th century, with fluid draperies and a color palette played on warm, earthy tones that enhance the lyricism of the subject. The decorative ensemble is remarkable: the canvas, measuring 51 x 40 cm, is enclosed in a 57 x 76 cm 19th-century frame, which is particular for its pure gold work complemented by pictorial decorations with whorls and floral motifs on the corners. Reinteled painting, shows minimal and marginal pictorial restorations. Provenance private collection of Romagnola family.
