Description and details
Icilio Federico Joni (Siena, 1866-1946) Important painting depicting the Madonna Enthroned with theChild, flanked by four angels, made according to the canons of 15th-centurySenese painting. The composition, rigorously symmetrical, presents theVirgin with a sweet and collected face, while the Child, seated on her knee, clasps a rosary, a devotional element of particular iconographic refinement. The angels, elegantly arranged on either side of the throne, are characterized by delicate physiognomies and a decorative rendering of hair and robes of great finesse. The finely embossed gold background and the richness of the throne point to a thorough knowledge of the Sienese-Gothic models, traceable to the tradition of Sano di Pietro, Neroccio diBartolomeo de' Landi, and Matteo di Giovanni. For stylistic characteristics, executive quality and pictorial technique, the work can be attributed to ICILIO FEDERICOJONI famous Sienese painter active between the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, known for his refined reinterpretations and reconstructions in the antique style today the object of growing interest on the part of international collectors.cm.118x63 Icilio Federico Joni was a much sought-after Italian painter and forger, specializing as a counterfeiter of Antique paintings (especially of the Sienese school) and the leader of the "forgers" of the same city. He was also known by the nickname PAICAP. The ruler of the "school of forgers" was Joni, who became well known for hisMadonnas, reproductions of those of the ancient Sienese school. Joni's production includes triptychs made in the late 1800s and early 1900s later sold with great success in Europe and the United States.
