Description and details
Consalvo Carelli (Naples, 1818-1900) a leading exponent of the Posillipo School and known for his skill in capturing landscapes and natural scenes. This painting, executed in oil on canvas, testifies to Carelli's ability to transpose even simple, rural subjects into imagesipoetic and realistic, celebrating both the natural environment and its creatures. The painting depicts a GOAT with a brown fleece, immortalizedin a lush and bright rural Campanian landscape. The animal, depicted in profile as it grazes, emerges against a backdrop of sloping hills and a luminous sky, elements typical of the environmental and luministic sensibility developed by Carelli during his work between Naples, Rome and Paris. The careful rendering of naturalistic details and chiaroscuro highlights the technical masteryacquired by the artist under the guidance of his father Raffaele and laterWilliam Leitch. The artist's signature is visible at the bottom.Preserved at the Certosa di San Martino in Naples is the preparatory drawing for our painting entitled "Study of a Goat" registered under inventory number 11364-245 - datable between 1845and 1870. https://catalogo.beniculturali.it/detail/HistoricOrArtisticProperty/1500327719 CM.42X47.5 WITH FRAME CM.24X30 UNFRAMED
