Description and details
Beautiful manly portrait with coeval frame - European School- Pastel technique on cardboard-frame with glass- mis.80x67 painted 60x47 The image shows a pastel portrait of a bald man with a thick beard and white mustache, painted in the 19th-century style. The work is described as a "manly portrait" of the "European school," and the technique used is pastel on cardboard. A similar work to the one shown, identified as the portrait of the artist Pyotr P. Sokolov (1821-1899), was painted by Alexander Nikolaevich Stepanov. However, it cannot be confirmed whether the subject of the image is actually Pyotr P. Sokolov. Other research results indicate that similar portraits of bearded men from the 19th and early 20th centuries were sold as antiques, in a style that could be called Napoleon III .
