Description and details
Antique oil painting on canvas with an original Mecca-gilded wooden frame. Depiction of Saint Jerome. The work is on its original canvas and has only undergone cleaning; no painting restoration has been performed. Frame dimensions: 62 x 46.5 cm; canvas dimensions: 51.5 x 37 cm. This painting belongs to the 17th-century Italian Baroque period; the work shows a strong adherence to specific geographical and stylistic trends, particularly the naturalist and Caravaggesque traditions. the elderly man’s gaunt, weathered anatomy, the realistic rendering of his musculature, his sallow complexion, and his thick beard all point directly to the circle of followers of José de Ribera, known as “Lo Spagnoletto.” Ribera widely popularized the iconography of Saint Jerome. There are also references to the Emilian and Bolognese traditions, influenced by the styles of Guido Reni or Guercino. The facial features and the bright red cloak share similarities with the Bolognese school, where the strong Caravaggesque chiaroscuro is tempered by a more classical figure composition. The presence of the trumpet of the Last Judgment emerging from the darkness above places the work in the period of the 17th-century Counter-Reformation. This is no longer merely a depiction of Saint Jerome the Hermit but rather the precise moment when the saint has a vision and hears the trumpet of the Last Judgment—a theme favored by Baroque patrons and artists to inspire meditation on salvation and the end of time.In summary, this is a work by an Italian master active in the mid-17th century, presumably working in a cultural transition zone between Neapolitan naturalism and Emilian classicism.
