Description and details

This is a stunning antique ebonized frame featuring intricate geometric repoussé work, commonly referred to as guilloché or flamed decoration. This style, also known as a Flemish or Dutch-style frame, originated in the Netherlands during the 17th century (the Dutch Golden Age), where dark ebony wood was meticulously carved to create plays of light and shadow that enhanced the paintings of the era. Similar pieces were also handcrafted in Italy and throughout Europe, both in the 17th century and in the subsequent historicist reproductions of the late 19th century. The frame features a rounded box profile with characteristic geometric projections at the corners and concentric wavy bands that taper toward the central opening. CONDITION IS EXCELLENT, NO RESTORATION - ORIGINAL 17TH CENTURY DIMENSIONS: 55 X 52 CM - FRAME 28X24 CM, INSET 26X22 CM - FRAME BAND WIDTH 15 CM
