Description and details

Pair of religious-themed paintings, oil on canvas Adoration of the Shepherds - Adoration of the Magi Venetian school, first quarter of the 18th century Size: 92 × 114 cm with frame, 79 × 99 cm canvas only. This fine pair of canvases, depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi, can be traced to the hand of a Venetian painter active in the first quarter of the 18th century, included in the lively cultural scene of the lagoon in a transitional phase between seventeenth-century instances and new eighteenth-century sensibilities. From the compositional point of view, the works still show a firm Baroque layout: the linear arrangement of the figures, with the Holy Family placed laterally, the draperies with metallic and iridescent reflections, and a certain Nordic breath betray a persistent legacy of the 17th century. At the same time, the adoption of a low viewpoint and the horizontal course of the scenes, combined with a warm, amber light that envelops the setting, recall the more up-to-date interpretations of the sacred theme elaborated in the Venetian context in the early eighteenth century. Stylistic comparisons reveal affinities with several protagonists of Venetian painting of the period: the luministic warmth and the scenographic setting recall the solutions of Antonio Balestra; the gracefulness of the female faces, the plastic conception of the figures and the dynamism of the angels, underscored by floating draperies, find consonances with the language of Bartolomeo Litterini; while the elegance of the Virgin and the physiognomies of the graceful, curly-haired children reveal a sensitivity akin to that of Nicolò Bambini. The artist, while remaining anonymous, demonstrates an ability to blend these different influences with balance, resulting in compositions of strong narrative and emotional impact. The result is a harmonious and intensely communicative pair of paintings, characterized by a skillful use of chiaroscuro and a delicate yet theatrical rendering of light, significant evidence of the richness and complexity of Venetian painting in the first two decades of the 18th century.
