Description and details

Oil painting on canvas depicting foreshortening of a landscape, with gilded frame of later date with nameplate -rinted-Author Giuseppe Hainmann -mis. frame 45 x 35 cm -painted 30 cm x 20 cmGiuseppe Haimann, son of a Hapsburg army officer of Bavarian origin, graduated in law from Pavia. During the uprisings of 1848 he participated in the Five Days of Milan, siding, albeit as a moderate, for independence. He then held positions in government offices in Vienna and Venice, before moving to the service of the Kingdom of Italy at the Ministry of Grace and Justice. Parallel to his work as a high official he always cultivated a passion for painting, a combination not uncommon at the time. After his studies at Brera he went to Florence and later to Rome, exhibiting regularly from the mid-1850s until the Unification of Italy. Influences of the various regional schools with which he had come into contact during his travels can be found in his painting: the feeling of nature of the Piedmontese painters (Chapel in the Countryside, lot 90) thus merges with the attention to color and realistic datum of the Tuscans (Aqueduct in the Roman Campagna, lot 88). These suggestions can be found in the works made during his 1869 trip to Greece, Asia Minor and the Holy Land (such as The Acropolis in Athens, lot 82). This first trip was to be followed by a six-year stay in Egypt, at the court of the Kedivé in Cairo, where he remained as a member of the International Reform Tribunal and as Division Chief in the Egyptian administration. His works from these years (lots 83 - 87), not intended for exhibition, represent important historical evidence with a clear documentary intent. In short, they appear as true reportages in painting, consisting of works not without lyrical accents and great happiness of image, immediate but rich in feeling and imbued with light.
