Description and details

Oil painting on canvas with an antique gilded frame from the period - Early 18th century, Italian school; the painting has been examined with a Wood’s lamp and shows no signs of retouching. The work is an antique oil painting on canvas depicting Our Lady of Sorrows, set within a rich gilded frame. At the center of the scene stands the Virgin Mary, wrapped in a traditional blue-green mantle over a red robe. The figure is captured in a moment of profound emotion and sorrow, linked to the Passion of Christ.Symbol of the Sword: A small sword pierces the Virgin’s chest, a clear iconographic reference to Simeon’s prophecy from the Gospel of Luke (“And a sword will pierce your own soul”), which defines the figure of the Mater Dolorosa. On the left, a winged cherub is seen in prayer, while on the right, two angels or angelic figures appear, witnessing the scene—a composition reminiscent of the devotional paintings of the Emilian or Bolognese schools from the 17th and 18th centuries.Characteristics of the Painting: The painting exhibits the typical signs of aging found in antique paintings, with slight craquelure on the painted surface. The style of the faces, the use of chiaroscuro, and the composition ideally link it to the Italian painting schools of the Baroque or late Baroque periods. frame dimensions 130x102 cm canvas 116x88 cm
