Giuseppe Angelelli 1803-1844. ink drawing on paper , bears the inscription : Study of women fetching water ,G. Angelelli from life, Thebes,Egypt , on the back some other sketches by the artist . measures ⁰22 x 14 cm , frame 25x31 cm.He was born Dec. 7, 1803, in Coimbra, Portugal, to Piero, a Roman, and Carolina Grifoni, a Florentine; he followed his parents in 1807 to Brazil and in 1816 to Peru, then to France and England. In 1818 he settled in Florence where he attended the drawing schools of Pietro Benvenuti and Pietro Ermini at the Accademia. In 1827 he was called as a draftsman to join the expedition to Egypt sponsored by the Tuscan government and led by the archaeologist Ippolito Rosellini. His work as draughtsman (1828-1829) served for engravings, some of which he made, of Rosellini's work (I monumenti dell'Egitto e della Nubia, Atlante,3 vols., Pisa 1832, 1834, 1844). Returning to Florence, he was commissioned by the Grand Duke to paint the members of the Franco-Tuscan expedition at the ruins of Thebes (Florence, Archaeological Museum). He also painted African landscapes and portraitsHe died Nov. 4, 1844.
