Description and details
Elegant 18th-century oil painting on canvas depicting the famous mythological scene of Diana and Endymion. The composition depicts the moment when the goddess Diana, descending from the sky into the clouds and illuminated by moonlight, approaches the sleeping young Endymion. The scene is bathed in an evocative nocturnal atmosphere, with the full moon in the background gently illuminating the protagonists. A few cupids appear on the right, while a hunting dog is depicted at the bottom, iconographic elements that recall the hunting world associated with the goddess Diana. Endymion, a young shepherd in Greek mythology condemned to eternal sleep, was loved by the goddess who descended to admire him every night. The composition, typically eighteenth-century, presents a soft and luminous painting with particular attention to the anatomical rendering of the figures and chiaroscuro passages, elements that recall the decorative mythological painting widespread in the Italian and European area in the eighteenth century. The painting is presented in a gilded wooden frame. Period: 18th century Technique: oil on canvas Dimensions of painting: 58 × 68 cm Dimensions with frame: 71 × 81 cm
