Description and details
Large polychrome majolica plate – Central Italy, 17th century An interesting large polychrome majolica plate made in Central Italy, dating to the 17th century. The plate features a rich and vibrant floral decoration, characterized by large stylized flowers, tulips, leaves, and sinuous plant motifs, painted in shades of cobalt blue, yellow, orange, and green on a white background. At the center of the composition, within a circular border, is a bird with polychrome plumage, surrounded by elegant floral and plant motifs. The decoration, executed with spontaneous and confident brushstrokes, reflects the vibrancy of the 17th-century Italian ceramic tradition. The reverse side is entirely covered in white glaze, with a ring-shaped foot that leaves the terracotta visible. The object shows signs of age, wear on the painted surface, small areas where the glaze is missing, and a visible crack, as documented in the photographs.
