Description and details

ATTILIO TORRESINI (Venice 1884 - Rome 1961) Bust portrait of his wife ( Angela Colasanti ), 1920s Bronze sculpture, cm. 40 x 23 Signature on back Marble base - Original workFrom his father Girolamo, an esteemed marble worker, he derived the first elements of sculptural art. He studied first at the Museo Artistico Industriale, then at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, under Antonio Dal Zotto. After graduating, he moved to Rome in 1914 and found a studio in Villa Strohl-Fern. He made works in bronze, terracotta, marble, and wood. During World War I, he was enlisted as a Cavalry officer.Exhibitions and showsAt the I Rome Biennale in 1921, he exhibited the sculpture Giovinetta seduta; he was present at the Primaverile Fiorentina in 1922, with Arianna dormiente, which revealed a classical layout, on forms that were influenced by Art Nouveau; in 1926 he sent a work to the XV Venice Biennale.A sensitive and intimist artist, he later distinguished himself in the "purist" turn of artists of the Roman school who were freeing themselves, both from monumental rhetoric and from the trappings of the last and decadent Art Nouveau. Two of his sculptures, La dormiente and Testa muliebre, thanks to Margherita Sarfatti were exhibited at the I Mostra del Novecento italiano. Sarfatti invited him in 1927 to the Roman exhibition "Dieci artisti del Novecento italiano," connected to the XCIII Esposizione degli Amatori e Cultori. In the years between 1928 and 1930 Attilio Torresini participated in the XVI and XVII Venice Biennale, the I Mostra del Sindacato Laziale and, in Milan, the II Mostra del Novecento italiano. He obtained a personal room at the IV Quadriennale in Rome in 1943. He was offered in 1941 the chair of sculpture at an art high school in Naples, then moved to Venice, where he taught until 1952.In 1965 the IX Quadriennale in Rome organized a retrospective, with bronzes made in the years 1958 to 1961.
