Description and details

This object is an antique wall-mounted crucifix and holy water font, dating from the 19th century and made in Naples, crafted from silver with unidentified hallmarks. The central cross is made of ebonized wood (or wood stained black to imitate ebony). The body of Christ (the Corpus), the upper scroll bearing the inscription “INRI,” the decorative cross ends (canti), the halo, and the lower basin for holy water are made of embossed and cast silver. Beneath Jesus’ feet is the classic symbol of a skull and crossbones, representing Golgotha (the Place of the Skull) and Christ’s victory over death. The cup has a defect, as shown in the photo. Dimensions: height 33 cm – width 21 cm
