Antique tempera on paper—from France—portrait of Pope Julius II—18th century This painting is a profile portrait of Pope Julius II della Rovere, Julius II was one of the most famous popes of the Italian Renaissance (in office from 1503 to 1513), also known as “the Warrior Pope” or for commissioning Michelangelo to paint the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
