Description and details

Antique oil on canvas ,This painting depicts St. Louis Gonzaga, patron saint of young people, identifiable by his cassock and the cross he holds in his hand. - Tuscan ( Sienese) school on the back inscribed with the author "Bartolomeo Gessi" school of G.Manetti-. Definitely a pupil of G.Manetti- The painting is dated 1605-After his early death, the iconography spread rapidly, often depicting him with the lily (symbol of purity) and the crucifix, or while receiving a vocation. Numerous depictions, including paintings of Roman circles from the first half of the 17th century, depict him with symbolic elements such as the crown (renounced for religious life) and the Madonna. We know that the saint died in 1591 at the age of only 23,and was canonized in 1726,so the painting is very interesting it is one of the earliest depictions of the saint. The work is in first canvas ,never restored small paint missing - mis.67 cm x 54.5 cm
