Description and details
This is an antique carved and painted wooden crucifix, a work of sacred art presumably dating from the late 17th century or perhaps earlier, showing stylistic features typical of Italian polychrome sculpture. Main CharacteristicsMaterial and Technique:The sculpture is made of carved, chalked and polychromatically painted wood. The cross painted in black ,in the upper part wooden cartouche with I.N.R.I inscription ,PART WHERE HE PLAYS THE FEET IN CARVED AND EBANIZED WOOD WITH GOLDEN FINISHING.Style and Iconography: Christ is depicted in the type of the Christus Patiens (Suffering Christ), with his head reclined, eyes closed or half-closed, and a knotted loincloth (cloth) covering his hips and legs. This iconography developed widely from the 13th century onward, placing emphasis on Jesus' humanity and suffering.Anatomical Details:Attention to anatomical details, such as obvious ribs and musculature, suggests a careful study of the suffering human body, common in the sculptural schools of the Baroque and late Renaissance.Condition: The sculpture shows signs of wear and aging, visible in the loss of paint (polychromy) and some slight damage, such as the absence of one of the fingers in the right hand, which is typical of well-preserved but lived-in antique works. Works of this type are often unique pieces made by master craftsmen or local schools, making precise attribution difficult without direct analysis by an art expert.
