Description and details
This is an antique devotional statuette depicting the Virgin Mary or a saint, crafted from carved, gilded, and polychrome wood. It features soft, flowing drapery typical of Italian or continental religious sculpture, dating from the late 17th century to the first half of the 18th century (Baroque period). Hand-carved wood with gold leaf gilding and polychrome painting on the face and hair. Condition: The work shows clear signs of age. There is a significant loss at the level of the right forearm (which may have originally held an iconographic attribute such as a palm of martyrdom or a scepter) and widespread flaking of the paint and gilding. It rests on a contemporary molded base, also gilded. Dimensions: H 29 cm - W 10 cm - D 7 cm
