Description and details
Rare and evocative devotional reliquary containing a blessed wax Agnus Dei, referable to the pontificate of Pope Innocent XI (1676-1689).The central wax medallion, oval in shape, presents a sacred depiction now naturally worn by time, but still legible in its setting. Along the rim is a circular inscription in Latin, partially visible, in which some letters traceable to the pontifical titling can be distinguished. The Agnus Dei is set in a refined decorative apparatus made with the papier roulé (rolled paper) technique, which develops an elegant floral composition enriched with polychrome textile inserts. These objects were made from the wax of the Easter candle and blessed by the pontiff, to be then kept as signs of protection and private devotion inside the home.At the bottom there is a handwritten cartouche referring to the Agnus Dei and the pontiff, an element that reinforces the historical identification of the set.The frame is non-original, while the glass is antique and coeval to the set.A fascinating object, combining spirituality, decorative art and devotional testimony of the 17th century.Period: 17th centuryOrigin: ItalyDimensions: 21 x 27 cmCondition: good overall condition; wax medallion with wear and tear consistent with the period; authentic and well-preserved set.
