Description and details
Luigi Moretti (Venice, 1884 – 1950) View of the Rialto Market Oil on canvas, 74×60 cm; with frame, 91.5×79 cm. Signed in red in the lower right corner. Metal plaque with the artist’s name on the frame. The painting depicts the Rialto Market with the bell tower of San Giacomo di Rialto in the background, stalls selling flowers, fruit, and vegetables, and a lively crowd of vendors and shoppers. The brushwork is loose and impasto-like, in the Post-Impressionist style, with evident textural impasto in the floral arrangements and awnings. The color palette is dominated by greens, reds, and pearly grays in diffused light, typical of the lagoon. On the reverse: a label from “La Galerie d’Art” in Mulhouse and Strasbourg (no. 5247) with a handwritten note identifying the artist as “a painter of genre scenes, portraits, and landscapes, born in Venice” and noting his membership in the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and his participation in the Salon des Indépendants. Second label titled “Marché de Rialto / Venise.” Two small restorations on the reverse, which do not affect the front. Luigi Moretti has exhibited regularly in Paris since 1911, and his Venetian views are documented in major European auction houses, including Christie’s London and Leclere Paris. This is one of the most characteristic subjects in his body of work. Contemporary carved and gilded frame.
