Description and details

Giovanni Basin Venice, 1835 - Rovigo, 1912 View of St. Mark's Basin with gondolas and sailboats Gouache on paper, 29×92 cm. Monogram "GB" on the sail of a boat Framed, cm. 42×110 The painting unfolds in a markedly horizontal format-almost a panoramic strip-and embraces the entire view of St. Mark's Basin seen from the water, according to the classical perspective of Venetian vedutismo. To the left, the tip of the Dogana and the dome of Santa Maria della Salute dominate the lagoon profile; in the center rises the Campanile di San Marco, flanked by the Procuratie, the Doge's Palace with its Gothic arches and the Zecca; toward the right the scene opens up to further buildings of the Molo front, until it dissolves into the basin. The foreground is enlivened by the comings and goings of typically Venetian boats: gondolas with black, nimble profiles glide over the dark water, while to the center-right a lateen-sailed felucca-whose mainsail bears the monogram GB, the discreet but unmistakable signature of the author, painted in clear evidence-occupies the scene with its load of color and movement. In the background, to the left, the Island of San Giorgio and the open lagoon can be glimpsed. The sky makes up almost the upper half of the composition: a broad Venetian blue, streaked with thin cirrus and cumuliform clouds that thicken toward the right, illuminated by that special light that has made the lagoon one of the most beloved subjects of European painting. The palette, dominated by deep blues, light blues, and soft ochres for the architecture, betrays the training of a painter who was well versed in the color rendering of gouache-a favorite technique for collectible views-and who knew how to calibrate tonal values to achieve an effect of luminosity and transparency. The elongated format, the choice of viewpoint from the basin and the topographical precision of the buildings refer directly to the famous 22-meter Panorama of Venice preserved at Palazzo Roverella, of which this gouache represents a precious and rare collectible version.
