Description and details
The sculptures are a pair of angels holding candles (or torches) made of finely carved, lacquered, and gilded wood. They are fine examples of sacred wood sculpture, typically attributed to the craft tradition of central Italy and dating to the second half of the 17th century (the height of the Baroque period). The two angels (or allegorical figures) are depicted standing in mirror-image positions, dressed in tunics with flowing drapery and decorated footwear. Each holds a cornucopia or a shaft serving as a candlestick, topped with a metal candlestick holder in which two long-stemmed candles are inserted. Style: The contrast between the dark lacquer and polychrome finish of the garments and the gold leaf gilding on the upper chest, hair, and structural details is a classic feature of Italian Baroque artistic craftsmanship, highly sought after in the antique market. The sculptures are in good condition but show some color loss. Height (without candles): 62 cm - Width: 32 cm - Depth: 20 cm
