The work has the typical characteristics of 18th-century iconography dedicated to Franciscan saints: Subject: The protagonist is a Franciscan saint , recognizable by his brown habit, caught in a moment of spiritual rapture as he turns his gaze toward a divine light among clouds and cherubim. An angel is visible at the lower left, a recurring element in depictions of the glory of saints of the period to emphasize their connection with the transcendent. Works with this specific composition are often catalogued as having been made in the first half of the 18th century . Difficult to understand the saint may be Saint Seraphim of Montegranaro Seraphim (1540-1604) was a humble lay brother of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, known for his deep prayer and simplicity. A work almost identical in setting and style is preserved in the collections of the Ministry of Culture. Other common interpretations for similar subjects, though less precise in this particular case, include St. Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata or St. Joseph of Cupertino in ecstasy, very common themes in Italian sacred painting.
