Description and details
This is a finely carved ivory plaque depicting a deer hunt, attributed to the 19th-century German school. It is a classic hunting scene in the aristocratic and courtly tradition. In the center and on either side, nobles and hunters on horseback are depicted, accompanied by a pack of hounds chasing a stag through a dense forest. The relief features very deep and detailed micro-carving typical of 19th-century German artistic craftsmanship, which drew on Renaissance and medieval themes. This type of rectangular plaque was often set as a decorative element on precious boxes, jewelry boxes, hunting cases, or small desk accessories. In this case, a paper backing has been added to the reverse so that it can stand upright. Dimensions: L 11 cm, H 6.5 cm
