Description and details

The icon depicts Saint Simeon of Verkhoturye (or Simeon of Merkushino), a Russian Orthodox saint. Egg tempera on panel, 27 cm x 22 cm. Born around 1607 to a noble family, he chose a life of poverty and asceticism in Siberia, working as an itinerant tailor for a living and helping the poor. Details of the Icon and the Saint Identity: The man in the blue robe is Saint Simeon of Verkhoturye, recognized as a miracle worker (thaumaturge). Context and Style: The Russian icon can be dated to the 19th century. Iconography: Simeon is often depicted standing, dressed in a simple blue robe, along a river, holding a fishing rod or bucket beside him, as he is considered the patron saint of fishermen. He is depicted in the act of holding a scroll with Cyrillic text, and an image of Christ blessing in the clouds is visible in the upper left. The river in the background is probably the Tura River, near the village of Merkushino, where he settled after leaving European Russia. Additional Information. Veneration: The faithful pray to St. Simeon for help, comfort, spiritual correction and healing of body and soul. Relics: His relics are kept in St. Nicholas Monastery in Verkhoturye, an important pilgrimage site. Places of Worship: Numerous churches in Russia, particularly in the Ural region, are dedicated to this saint.
