This painting is a depiction of the Visitation, the biblical episode in which the Virgin Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visits her cousin Elizabeth, who is also expecting St. John the Baptist. Details of the work Subject: The composition shows the meeting between the young Mary, surrounded by a divine light (nimbus), and the elderly Elizabeth. In the background are St. Joseph and St. Zechariah. Style and Origin: It is attributed to the Italian school, probably from central Italy, and dates from the first half of the 18th century (18th century). Author: Although there are similar versions attributed to followers of the French artist Jean André (known as Frère André), this specific work is from the Italian school of the 1700s.
