The work illustrates an episode from the book of Exodus : Moses after fleeing Egypt arrives at a well in the territory of Madiaj . There he intervenes to defend the seven daughters of Jetro ( the priest of Midian ) from the local shepherds who were preventing them from watering their flocks .
