An elegant and refined *Madonna and Child Asleep*,a fine oil painting on canvas dated 1849 and signed on the reverse: “AntoniusBoldini Ferrariensis fecit. 1849”. Antonio Boldini (1799–1872), father of the famous painterGiovanni Boldini, was an artist and restorer active in Ferrara duringthe 19th century. Trained in the Ferrara milieu and the Roman academictradition, he devoted himself primarily to sacred painting. His work played animportant role in the artistic development of his son Giovanni Boldini, who received his first lessons in drawing and painting from his father. The work depicts the Virgin gently gazing atthe Baby Jesus asleep in her arms. The composition,characterized by intense maternal feeling and delicate spirituality, is distinguished by the balance of its forms, the softness of the flesh tones, and the subtlerendering of the drapery, dominated by the traditional Marian tones of blue and red. In the full spirit of the 19th century, the painting reveals a solid academic training and a particular focus on the Italian Renaissance model, with references to Emilian devotional painting. The blended landscape background helps to enhance the sense of intimacy and contemplation of the scene. The work is enhanced by a spectacular gilded and carved wooden frame, richly decorated with plant motifs and ornamental panels that heighten its visual impact.
