Description and details
Lodovico Tommasi (Livorno, 1866 – Florence, 1941) – Still Life with Cauliflower, 1930 An interesting still life by the Tuscan painter Lodovico Tommasi (1866–1941), painted in oil on cardboard, signed and dated 1930 in the lower right corner. The work depicts a composition of vegetables dominated by a large cauliflower, arranged inside a container, with a lemon in the foreground. The painting stands out for its vigorous and spontaneous brushwork, characterized by broad, full, and concise brushstrokes, through which the artist builds volume and renders the effects of light on the subject with great sensitivity. Particularly interesting is the color palette, which plays on shades of brown, green, and gray, enlivened by the light, luminous tones of the cauliflower and the intense yellow of the lemon. The composition, seemingly simple, reveals remarkable painterly quality, in which everyday objects become the focal point of an expressive exploration grounded in color, light, and the freedom of the brushstroke. Lodovico Tommasi was one of the leading figures in Tuscan painting between the 19th and 20th centuries, closely associated with the Macchiaioli circle and later with the Post-Macchiaioli movement. His body of work includes landscapes, scenes of daily life, and still lifes, all characterized by a distinctive sensibility for color. The work, dated 1930, is an interesting example of the artist’s mature output. Presented in a gilded frame with a wide interior band lined with fabric. Technique: oil on cardboard. Signature and date: signed and dated 1930 in the lower right corner. Dimensions of the painting: 44.5 × 33.5 cm. External dimensions of the frame: 70 × 60 cm.
