Description and details
Arcadian Landscape with Figures – 18th-Century Roman School Period: 18th century, first half; School: Roman; Medium: Oil on canvas; Dimensions: 95 × 63 cm (painting); 110 × 78 cm (frame) An interesting oval-shaped oil painting on canvas depicting an Arcadian landscape animated by figures and animals, attributable to the Roman school of the first half of the 18th century. The composition unfolds within a vast, tree-lined landscape, featuring figures in the foreground, grazing cattle, and an evocative background characterized by mountainous terrain and distant architecture. Particularly noteworthy is the painterly quality of the figures, carefully rendered in their faces, anatomy, and drapery, as well as the depiction of the animals and vegetation. The work belongs to the tradition of classicist and Arcadian landscape painting that developed in Rome between the late 17th century and the first half of the 18th century, within the cultural circle of painters such as Andrea Locatelli and Jan Frans van Bloemen. The painting is preserved in its beautiful antique frame, believed to be contemporary, made of carved and gilded wood, with an oval opening and rosette decorations in the four corners. Condition: good. The painting has been re-framed and has undergone previous cleaning treatments.
