Giulio da Vicchio – A Glimpse of Sicily

An interesting oil on canvas by the Livorno-born painter Giulio da Vicchio, created in the second half of the 20th century during his time in Sicily. The work depicts an evocative view of an ancient Sicilian village, composed of a succession of walls, staircases, and architectural elements bathed in Mediterranean light. In the foreground, a seated female figure brings the composition to life, creating a pleasing contrast with the brightness of the surrounding walls. Particularly noteworthy is the textural painting style, achieved through dense, full brushstrokes that lend richness and movement to the surfaces. The color palette is dominated by ochre, earth tones, beige, and pink, enlivened by touches of blue, white, and green, effectively capturing the warm Sicilian atmosphere. The painting is signed “Giulio da Vicchio” in the lower right corner and bears the inscription “Sicilia” in the lower left corner. It is presented in a wooden frame with a fabric mat and a thin gilded inner border.Artist: Giulio da VicchioEra: second half of the 20th centuryPeriod: SicilianTechnique: oil on canvasCanvas dimensions: 30 × 40 cmDimensions with frame: 50 × 62 cmSignature: lower rightInscription: “Sicilia,” lower left
