Description and details
Oil on canvas by the Livorno-based painter Giulio Da Vicchio (pseudonym of Giulio Rontini, 1925–2004), signed in the lower right corner and titled “Mercato” on the reverse. The work depicts a lively market scene, one of the most characteristic subjects in the artist’s oeuvre. A group of female figures, gathered around the market stalls, brings the composition to life with a rich interplay of gestures and glances. The brushwork is swift, concise, and textured, capturing the everyday atmosphere rather than descriptive detail, while the palette—rich in warm tones and chromatic contrasts—lends the scene great vitality. The son of painter Ferruccio Rontini, Giulio Da Vicchio chose his own artist’s name to distinguish himself from his father and developed a style of painting deeply rooted in the post-Macchiaioli tradition of Livorno. His favorite subjects were ordinary people, markets, fishermen, and everyday life, interpreted with a personal sensibility and a strong sense of immediacy. gallerialestanze.it +1 The work is presented in a pleasing gilded wooden frame, well-suited to the style of the painting. Dimensions Painting: 30 × 40 cm Frame: 48 × 60 cm The painting is in good condition, ready to be displayed in a home or added to a collection.
