Description and details
An elegant set of four Genoese mirrors, dating from the second half of the 19th century, originally part of the furnishings of an historic Genoese palace. The frames, made of carved wood and gilded with Mecca gold, feature rich 18th-century-style decoration, with undulating and sinuous profiles, volutes, foliage motifs, and shell motifs. The upper portion is characterized by a large shell motif flanked by volutes, while carved and fluted elements extend along the sides, framing the oval mirror. At the bottom, the decoration concludes with a hanging leaf motif. The four mirrors form a cohesive set; three share the same decorative scheme, while one exhibits slight variations in the carving—a detail perfectly consistent with the artisanal craftsmanship of the period. The Mecca gilding retains a beautiful antique patina, with natural variations in tone and traces of age that lend depth to the surface and highlight the quality of the carving. It is particularly interesting to arrange them in pairs, in a group of four, or individually, while maintaining the strong decorative character of the ensemble in every case.Provenance: Genoa, an historic Genoese palacePeriod: second half of the 19th centuryMaterial: carved and Mecca-gilded woodDimensions: height 65 cm; width approximately 40–40.5 cmQuantity: four piecesIn my opinion, the photo captures the group well: having four of them is a commercial selling point, and I would include that right in the title.
