Box in plain lacquer—18th century

An 18th-century “lacca povera” box of Venetian origin. "Lacca povera" is a type of decoration typical of 18th-century Venetian furniture, which involved using small cut-out prints glued onto the wood and then finished with shellac; applied in several very thin layers, this gave the decoration a lustrous and uniform appearance. In Venice, it became a true trend to use this type of lacquering, which was easier to execute and more affordable. This technique was also used to embellish objects such as small chests and caskets.
