Description and details
Oil painting on canvas depicting the Annunciation, an Italian work datable to the end of the 17th century. The composition presents the Virgin Mary caught in the moment of the annunciation, kneeling at a lectern with an open book, while the Archangel Gabriel enters the scene with a solemn gesture and the lily, symbol of purity. The dove of the Holy Spirit appears at the top, according to traditional iconography. The layout is characterized by a pronounced use of chiaroscuro, with strong contrast between the shaded area and the luminous opening that invests the figures, a typical element of late 17th-century painting of Italian scope. The draperies are constructed with warm and deep tones, with particular attention to reds and ochres. The painting shows a lived pictorial surface, with oxidized varnish and widespread abrasions, and is to be considered in need of restoration. Despite this, the legibility of the image remains good and retains decorative and historical interest.Wooden frame not contemporary.Measurements:Painting: cm 78 x 100Frame: cm 87.5 x 110
